Maggie Malick Wine Caves
- As far Northwest as you can get in Loudoun County, near the end of county road 671/ Harper’s Ferry Road. Maggie Malick is a female owned winery ; the owners were naval veterans from Washington State, she is now an aeronautical engineer. Shifted from growing grapes for other wineries to making their own wine relatively recently.
- Wine. Top Tier. 2020 was an excellent year for Maggie Malick wines in competitions, bringing it into our state-wide Top 20 Wineries, and our Northern Virginia Top 10. Two gold medals came back from the Finger Lakes Wine Competition, for the Albarino and Viognier, to go with six silver medals. At the Best of Loudoun, Maggie Malick’s Petit Manseng was tapped as the wine of the year for the county, while two more wines (the 2017 Fortissimo and the 2019 Viognier) also were awarded best in class gold medals. Awarded a gold medal for their Petit Manseng at the San Francisco Chronicle nation-wide wine competition, along with four silver medals and one bronze. Won three gold medals at the 2019 Chronicle competition, for the Petit Verdot, Kaleidoscope and Viognier and one gold medal at the 2018 event (Petit Verdot), along with two silver medals and a bronze. Three silver medals (Petit Verdot, Viognier and Cabernet Franc) in the 2019 Virginia Governor’s Cup wine competition. Gold medal at the Best of Loudoun 2019 competition for the Mourverde, and two gold medals at the 2018 Best of Loudon event (Albariño and Viognier). Two silver medals and four bronze at the 2018 Finger Lakes Wine Competition. Part of BS “Best of Loudoun” case. They plant Tannat, a distinctive grape reputed as the “healthiest wine grape in the world,” due to the high level of anti-oxidants in its skin tannins.
- Setting. Small place, highly unusual cave-like look, as the tasting room is indeed a wine cave – a prefab one. Several reviewers compare it to a Hobbit Hole. Pretty view outdoors, with a sloping hill going down to a fish pond. Expect to see rescue dogs. Good baguettes; food available for purchase.
- Stories. Natural Virginia — Shenandoah. Maggie Malick’s is as close as you can get among Virginia wineries – and nearly anywhere in Virginia – to Harper’s Ferry, and the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. The winery is on Harper’s Ferry Road, and only 2-3 miles from the site. Harper’s Ferry National Park is definitely worth the visit. The Shenandoah River is one of the eastern United States’ most scenic rivers, and most sung about; its name is most often taken to mean “Daughter of Stars.” A great place to go canoeing, fishing or camping.
